My Library
People are my library, my writing inspired by what I learn: ideas, inspiration, wisdom, and sometimes some eclectic whimsy for good measure, all centred around #OpenLeadership. At the heart of all of this is that I write to share learnings and to discover my thoughts. Over the years i have written (mostly) daily, over 2000 posts and 1,000,000 words (that last part blows my mind, tbh!). Enjoy browsing.
Savouring
So I’m in Jersey for a few days and found the wonderful Locke’s café. Talked to the owner and gave them my rapturous thanks for the love and care that goes into everything they do. I also told them their coffee was among the best I had ever tasted. More in hope than...
Savouring
I didn’t ask the price. Some things are simply worth savouring.
Invest now in growth and improvement
We live in uncertain times. In such times, continue to invest in growth and improvement. We live in uncertain times. For business leaders in the UK in particular, we have a Prime Minister who seems committed to driving us off a cliff edge of "no deal" Brexit come...
How to enjoy and have productive disagreements
Do you dread getting into disagreements? What if I told you that the highest performing teams have the most disagreements? What would it take for you to want to have more disagreements? What if I told you that you could actually look forward to disagreements, even...
Sarcasm in writing. Don’t do it
Leadership is about people and so about communication, so take this one as a blunt and strongly word tip for us all. Don't be sarcastic in writing. Just don't. Please. Ever. Sarcasm in writing runs a high risk of being misinterpreted I wrote about the “7%-38%-55%...
Taking the day off
It is a beautiful day today, yet here I sit with the commitment to posting every day. Hmm. Sometimes we all need a day off, so tomorrow I shall return with a longer post, and also note that there will be a few more "long reads" coming up in the month of August....
Are you willing to “open the box”?
Japanese puzzle boxes require three steps to fully open them In coaching, I have learned that there are three "boxes", three levels of Context where one can help a client around their leadership and their business. For simplicity, let's call them: Box 1: Business...
How do you find out what others want? Ask
Yesterday I wrote: "Tell people what you want". Today, a reflection that the way to find out what others want is simply to ask them. The thing is, asking them what they want is only the start. Asking is an art, as is listening. Ask, listen, ask, listen, then...
You are what you measure – so what do you measure?
"..the objective of economic policy should be collective well-being: how happy and healthy a population is, not just how wealthy a population is." ~ Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland, TED Summit, Edinburgh, July 2019 As UK government and politics, in...
Tell people what you want

Less is more
Today is a consciously quiet day for me, with absolutely nothing planned, a day out to rest in the middle of a busy period. So, a reminder today that sometimes less is more. I'll model that by making this one of my shortest daily posts ever. What could you do less of...
Learning energises
Learning something new can give you new found energy. I love to learn, yet not every time I attend a talk or workshop or training to I feel I learned something new. Thinking about this, if training is receiving information, learning is absorbing and embedding it in a...
