#BeMoreYou – A tree gives glory to god by being a tree

by | Aug 27, 2020 | Beautiful Business, Beautiful Leadership, Open Leadership

As I write this, Wednesday, I had planned to spend much of the day writing multiple posts for this site for the coming days. However, something slowed me down, and it was a quote shared with me on Monday this week during a highly nourishing meeting with Julian Summerhayes. That quote was:

A tree gives glory to god by being a tree

Thomas Merton, from his book “New Seeds of Contemplation”

On Tuesday this week, I then had David McLean as my guest on the weekly #WhatComesNext.Live show, where we mused on, among other things, self-leadership and I mentioned the distilled wisdom of my mentor Ed Percival, captured in three words and honoured in the page on this website that highlights my top four qualities of #OpenLeadership, those words being #BeMoreYou.

So, today much contemplation, then I found myself crystallising that into a thought on leadership.

Today I saw Ben Brabyn, leader of the burgeoning #GenieShares movement, post this post:

I then replied:

Feels stunning simple… be a good human, yet it seems an endless quest to find leaders in business and public service that are, as Peter puts it, Decent.

A thought that occurs to me is around “perfection is the enemy of progress”. As I reflected in conversation with David Mclean just yesterday on this week’s #WhatComesNextLive show, my greatest mentor in life, Ed Percival, distilled five decades of wisdom as a coach to three words. #BeMoreYou.

Yes, we must have standards of decency in leadership, and also we can, all of us, constantly aspire to be more, to be better humans.

So

A tree gives glory to god by being a tree

In other words, “Be You”

As a leader, rather than try to be the perfect image of what is expected of a leader, simply focus on being more every day, so:

#BeMoreYou

Finally, to be an elite leader, I recently wrote: “How to go from great to elite“, in which I took learnings from Josh Waitzkin, including that he feels the essence of helping someone moving from great to truly elite is to help them: “express the core of their being

So, let us wake up each morning and seek to be a better human. As I put it on the #BeMoreYou page, graphically:

Me More You

My own Purpose is #MakingPotentialPossible.

I’d love to talk to you about supporting you realise your own potential, to #BeMoreYou

Let’s talk
