If in doubt, make it shorter

make it shorter

Right now I am mulling over several longer blog posts, including :

  • What the economic history of Argentina can teach us all
  • Learnings from the “SCARF” model to apply to leading teams (and to self-awareness)
  • “Lies, damned lies and statistics”, linked to why the political stories around immigration are always skewed to suit the political agenda of the day, rather than the economic reality
  • Why science needs creativity to be more scientific

Each of these will take some focus to make complex combinations of ideas digestible and, as the Sketchplanations drawing above illustrates, it takes time to edit something down.

Meanwhile, as I allow these ideas to marinade, today I dipped into the folder I receive each day from the master of daily posting (and one of the inspirations for this blog, Seth Godin), where I noted that almost all of his blogs are very, very short. As I’ve said and written before “If in doubt, make it shorter”, and this post from Seth is a great reminder that a message can be powerful as well as concise, and sometimes more powerful because it is concise:

A long time is not the same as never

It might feel like an endless slog now, but when the innovation appears, people won’t remember how long it took to get here.

Often, we assume that today’s snapshot is actually the entire movie, but it rarely is.

When I do ultimately post about any of the topics above, I’m reminded to keep them shorter.
