Becoming the person you need to be…

Becoming the person you need to be

Becoming the person you need to be… is an act of love

#MakingPotentialPossible

Approaching a decade ago, Hugh McLeod completed a commission (the picture above) for me. The nature of the commission involved a “creative constraint”, where I could tell him a little about me and what was important to me, then he allowed his creative process to flow from there.

(For more on creative constraints, and another reference to Oli Barrett, mentioned in yesterday’s post, “Plus One” see an earlier post “Creative Constraints: Tenner and 10x“)

For Hugh to set his creative juices flowing, I told him how my intent of #MakingPotentialPossible was (and is!) important to me, and then described some of the work I do with client and their businesses.

I was a little surprised by the image he created and the words he used: “Becoming the person you need to be is an act of love”, but I also instinctively loved it right away and it has hung in pride of place in my study ever since.

What reminded me of this commission and the words Hugh chose was a particular client session this week. I work 1:1 with this client each week for an hour on Zoom (as I do with most of my clients). Often we talk about their business and work through opportunities and challenges. That said, back when we began working together some time ago, our core focus was on them as an individual and their leadership. In our last session, we spoke only of them what they were aware of, and how they chose to respond to certain challenges.

In talking this through, not only did we evolve further the awareness they had and the tools available to them to respond to any challenge, but there was an awareness of what I could call “becoming”, of the individual evolving to be more and more their highest and best self, something beginning to cascade through their life and work. As I said to them at one stage “THIS is the work”.
