I wrote this the other day in response to a letter tweeted out by the Lionesses, the England Women’s Football team who just won the European Championships.
Businesses and athletes have often shunned politics, but policies impact lives so increasingly to not take a stand is to take a stand. So, use your platform, whether CEO or athlete, to take a stand for what you believe is right #takeastand
For CEOs, increasingly the core issue is ESG and particularly green issues as well as governance. In our global world it is also about which countries and companies we are willing to deal with on an ethical level. The people in our organisations, our investors, broader society want to know where we stand. It is no longer a valid position to be apolitical.
The Lionesses addressed one key area, that of PE (Physical Education) classes in state schools, where often children don’t get the 2 hours minimum per week they are meant to, and where only 63% of girls are allowed to play football in the UK.
