Triangulate insights but don’t get in a triangle

Triangulate

In my work, I am regularly working with and otherwise talking often to multiple key people in a business. As I highlight on my home page, what I bring is “Actionable Insights”, authentic, creative, relevant and “cut through” insights delivered through deep listening allied with decades of business experience. So, when I talk to multiple leaders within an organisation, I can naturally find connections between not only their individual thoughts, ideas, opportunities, but also can see connections and insights across all of those conversations for the organisation as a whole.

In summary, when in such a role I can “triangulate” to see additional insights that go beyond any individual or individual’s context or situation and so further support the entire organisation.

Now, this then comes with one very significant warning to others who may find themselves in a position to “triangulate” such insights across relationships within an organisation, and that is to “triangulate insights but don’t get in a triangle”.

What do I mean? Put simply, don’t be in the middle of a potential conversation between two people, and, critically, you can (carefully) triangulate insights, but never (never!) share anything that has been shared with you in confidence in any conversation nor give an opinion about your coachee, their thoughts, their ideas, their views. This is something for any coach and sounding board to always be aware of and also to ensure that all individuals you are working with are clear on this and on boundaries.

As I drafted this post, I wrote a post about four times longer giving example after example, tip after tip, ideas and rules to consider using for such relationships. For the published post though, I am simply highlighting the opportunity to triangulate to come up with contextual insights is one that comes with the critical importance of never getting into a triangle.

PS am happy to talk to you any leader, coach or advisor in such situations and support you in talking through these opportunities and challenges, you can book a call with me here.
