Hold your plans more lightly

In my practice (always practice, always the journey, not a destination) of coaching, I constantly seek to learn more, to grow more, to build awareness more, all in support of growing as a coach and human.

One core element of that for me is the practice of seeking to be unattached. Unattached to judgements, outcomes, opinions, even yes, biases.

In this practice, a thought I distilled years ago (and, specifically, as a personal anchor around seeking understanding of what is known as “three principles”) is to:

Hold your thoughts lightly

Today, then curating a newsletter from Rob Poynton (see or listen to Rob’s appearance as a guest on #WhatComesNextLive here), at the core of which is this exhortation, linked to a wonderful newsletter about the challenges of planning ahead in 2021 and the negative impact this can have for us when we have to change plans:

If we could hold our plans more lightly it might enable us to be more compassionate with each other and ourselves, when events do not meet our expectations. It might then be possible to use our experience of the pandemic to re-calibrate our sense of ourselves and our place on this planet; to nuance the understanding we have of both our capacities and our shortcomings.
