To lead or to follow

follow or lead

To lead or to follow?

I recently took a week out at a workshop in Baja, Mexico to focus on my own professional development.

I’ve spent most of my career identifying leaders who would benefit from my support, solidifying that in the work I do now as a sounding board to leaders.

One “Baja Aha” I had was that I need to lead more, rather than focus on supporting leaders.

So, what might my epiphany in Mexico mean?

I’m not sure yet what “I need to lead more means”.

I will absolutely continue to support leaders as their sounding board, and at the same time, I will now be attuned towards opportunities to lead. Sometimes it may be as simple as asserting a strongly held opinion in my writing, sometimes stepping up to lead more readily rather than waiting to be asked to lead as has often happened for me.

Knowing when to lead and when to follow is also a valuable awareness to have, I don’t consider this to be a binary choice, whether in work, family, other relationships.

For now, I leave you with someone who is having a radical impact as a political leader at the age of 29 years old, Senator Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez. Watch this short video and see her tear shreds in the corruption inherent in the political system in the USA.
