The Meaning of This is Water for Leaders

by | Mar 17, 2023 | Open Leadership, Response-ability, Self-Knowledge

this is water

I have often referenced “This is Water” (see this wonderful video expression of his thoughts below) in other posts, so this time a post dedicated to analysing the importance of this speech for leaders.

Oh, and I have tried a different style of analysis today, I hope you like it. A prize to the first person to recognise the specific change in the style I’ve adopted in this piece of writing ;0

David Foster Wallace’s commencement speech, “This is Water,” is a powerful and thought-provoking piece that offers valuable insights for leaders. Through his words, Wallace emphasizes the importance of mindfulness, empathy, and perspective-taking, urging individuals to be more aware of the world around them and to consider the perspectives of others.

One of the key themes of the speech is the idea of mindfulness. Wallace argues that we are often so caught up in our own thoughts and desires that we fail to see the world as it really is. We tend to view the world through the lens of our own self-interest, and this can lead to a sense of entitlement and a lack of empathy for others. As leaders, it is important to cultivate mindfulness and to be aware of our own biases and assumptions. By doing so, we can better understand the needs and perspectives of those around us and make more informed and compassionate decisions.

Another important theme of the speech is empathy. Wallace emphasizes the importance of recognizing the humanity of others, even those who may seem different or unimportant. He suggests that we should try to imagine what it is like to be in someone else’s shoes and to consider their experiences and struggles. This kind of empathy is crucial for effective leadership, as it enables us to connect with our colleagues, understand their needs and motivations, and work together towards common goals.

Finally, the speech highlights the importance of perspective-taking. Wallace encourages us to look beyond our immediate experiences and consider the larger context in which we live. He suggests that we should try to see the world from multiple perspectives and to challenge our own assumptions and beliefs. This kind of perspective-taking can help us to become more open-minded, adaptable, and creative leaders, as we learn to approach problems and challenges from a variety of angles.

In conclusion, David Foster Wallace’s “This is Water” is a powerful and insightful speech that offers valuable lessons for leaders. Through his words, Wallace emphasizes the importance of mindfulness, empathy, and perspective-taking, urging us to be more aware of the world around us and to consider the perspectives of others. By embracing these principles, we can become more effective and compassionate leaders who are better equipped to navigate the challenges of our complex and interconnected world.
