Embracing a dreich weekend

by | Jan 8, 2023 | Open Leadership

dreich weather

dreich
/driːx/
adjective
SCOTTISH

I also like this definition:

A combination of dull, overcast, drizzly, cold, misty and miserable weather. At least 4 of the above adjectives must apply before the weather is truly dreich

Well, this weekend, the weather where I am (see the photo from my desk this morning) includes all six of those adjectives.

One can either go with or against the flow in life, work, and weather (!), so this weekend I’m going with it, embracing this dreich weather this weekend. My Sunday, then, will be indoors with a pot of tea, dipping into the pile of books by my armchair (hmm, will omit the usual start of year “list of books”!)

Now, on another “dreich” day I might choose to put on waterproofs and go out for a walk for several hours. I even did this earlier last week, out in lashing wind and rain with a friend and client. By the end of it we were “fair drookit!” even with the waterproofs on! Why stay in today then?

Simply because it will be the last Sunday I will be at home for six weeks, as after today the next five Sundays I will be (in order) in:

  1. Scotland
  2. Paris
  3. Madeira
  4. Cayman
  5. Cayman

These are for a mix of family, mini-breaks and also business, but suffice it to say they take me back to the years when I used to be away from home for over 90 nights each year. Whilst that level of travel is not something I will go back to, I do look forward to meeting people “old and new” on my upcoming travels, starting in Scotland on January 16/17 and then Cayman the week of February 6th. If you’d like to meet up, drop me a line.
