Change can start with changing the conversation

by | Sep 9, 2021 | Open Leadership

After many conversations in Cayman over the past week or so, amongst many, many positives are some entrenched issues that seem totally stuck at the national level. This sort of thing happens in all countries, businesses, relationships at one level or other.

Whatever the issue, when things become deeply entrenched, I am reminded from these conversations that change is highly unlikely to happen through looking to convince one group to change their mind.

A more effective approach can be to raise the conversation from the detail to a level that everyone can get behind and play their part in. From that point of agreement and alignment, a recommended next stage is to then build engagement and have all stakeholders feel ownership, feel they belong, are part of the solution, the future.

I have my own quite big and radical idea for one way to change the conversation for Cayman. It starts with a commitment to build the economy and society around being the green capital of the Caribbean. By commitment I mean a radical commitment, truly pivoting the entire country to lead on this, with massive financial and societal commitment.

I have some core structural ideas in mind that have come from listening and learning from experts, not just the last week or so but over decades. At the moment, I am discussing these ideas individually with a few people to take these starting ideas and see what develops for the good of Cayman. If this matters to you and you’d like to engage with me on this I’d love to listen to your thoughts then share mine.
