I am just back from a week in Cayman and I too feel “immensely rich” right now, as I am fortunate enough to have work that brings me meaning, and I have reached a stage where the difference I make and have made for others is reflected to me in our small Cayman community often and in unexpected ways.
One evening this week I was in a local cafe celebrating 17 years of serving Cayman by having an evening art event. As is the way, there were people that I’d known for many years. At one point four of us were sharing stories of Cayman “back in the day”. I knew two of them well, but the third I knew them but couldn’t place him exactly.
After a while the two of us were alone and we chatted more. He reminded me that I had coached him at basketball “back in the day” and we soon were telling stories of that time back in around 1995 when the fledgling Cayman Islands junior national squad were learning and building something and I was one of their coaches. The photo above is of that team in 1996, by then under the legendary Coach Voot O’Garro.
I then asked him for his name, and when he told me that I suddenly knew exactly who he was on that team and was so excited, as I remembered how he looked back then (much skinnier!) and how he played (fast, full of energy, and so talented!). His reaction was priceless, I guess some part of him wasn’t sure I’d remembered him or those days, but I did, in detail.
So yes, I feel immensely rich.
