As I’ve noted in passing on past posts, I moved house four months ago and have been gradually getting the place the way I like it. This has accelerated over the last two weeks, with various trades in the house almost non-stop the last few weeks.
I found it a little challenging to think (and so to write longer posts) when things were happening around me, but at least I could close my study door most of the time and focus.
However, this week I have found it even more difficult to think, as I’ve taken on doing some of the painting, something that will take at least another week or two. Not only are several rooms pulled apart and furniture and boxes stacked everywhere (including filling up my study, which has already been painted!), but my mind is now often occupied with the process of painting and decorating, leaving no space for me to focus on deep thinking until this is completed.
On a broader level, this does have me reflecting, and then recognising something quite simple, that I need peace and quiet in order to be able to think. In our busy business world, we seem to value the volume of production of work (much of which seems to be clearing emails, attending meetings etc), yet not enough value on thinking and creating the space to think.
One person who is looking to address this is my friend Gib Bulloch, a native of the Isle of Bute off the coast of Scotland. He and the team at Craigberoch run “Decelerator” programmes where you can take the time out to think within a programme that is consciously created and curated at every level to allow you to “decelerate”, to invest in yourself and your business, to have the peace and quiet to think, to have ideas.
The next Decelerator Lab runs from Monday, September 4th through Friday, September 8th. Am not sure if they have any spaces remaining, these programmes are much in demand. Still, if finding peace and quiet to think is valuable to you and to your business, I encourage you to take a look at the site here.
