After yesterday’s post, “Talk to me about – Elephants”, in a conversation where we discussed this way of introducing myself, I also noted in that conversation that I introduce myself as, simply, Tom. No title, letters after my name, business I work for, simply “Tom”.
Who am I, though?
A few times over the last week a phrase from Rory Sutherland kept coming back to me while listening to people in conversation: “the problem with logic is that it kills off magic”, see my post on this from a few years back. This phrase is powerful for me, as this is a lot of who I am. I’m deeply trained and versed in the logical, and the rational (hey, Chartered Accountant by training over here!), and at the same time my truest self sees the potential in others, encourages them to dream, then turn that into reality, as I capture in my personal intent statement of #MakingPotentialPossible.
My clients and my friends, then, know that I will encourage them to live into their bravery and their dreams, and then ground them in reality and support them in making them a reality. Today, then, I’m sharing a past post that, through three brief stories, lets you know a little more about me, that I am someone who is both a romantic idealist and magical thinker, but also someone who creates a real-world balance and counterpoint to this through being grounded and pragmatic.
I wrote: “Leadership: Romance, Life in Full Colour and Magical Reality” nearly five years ago and it continues to resonate strongly with me as to “who am I?”, as well as a number of my beliefs around the potential for leaders and their leadership.
Oh, and at the end, I share with you who Dr Robert Jarvik is and where his dreams led him and gave to the world.
Who are you? What do you dream of?
