As I understand it, to “go on Walkabout”, an Australian aboriginal term, is to take a literal and spiritual journey, where a teen goes out into the outback, often for months on end. It is about a connection to spirit and, for those teens, transition to adulthood.
I love to take time away from the day to day, to wander (I love the JRR Tolkien phrase, “not all those who wander are lost” too!), but that is often a one off event for a few hours or perhaps a day at a time.
As I come to the end of an eventful year that has seen some significant challenges, I am full of gratitude and looking forward with eagerness to next year.
At the same time, though, I send the need to create space from one year to the next.
So, over the next ten days or so I intend to wander more, to go on a “micro” Walkabout.
I will disconnect from my day to day routines and disconnect as much as I can from anything other than that which nourishes me.
As to walking itself, I commit to go for a walk each day, without phone, without headphones, just to walk.
Will I write on this blog? If the mood takes me, so “perhaps”.
So, for now, enjoy your own holiday season break, I will see you soon.
