Right now I am towards the end of another chemo cycle (and yes, thankfully I will be finished with my final cycle in just over three weeks). If I do anything much beyond sitting still I find myself feeling sick and exhausted. The most I tend to do in a day is walk five minutes to the shops and back to pick up a few things to eat. For someone who has always related to themselves as fit, strong, and healthy, this is difficult to face.
At the same time, though, it does anchor for me how important it is to treasure my health, so when I finish chemo and my energy returns, I will treasure every moment of exercise, as well as being able to eat and drink what I want (but always focussing on a balanced and healthy diet).
So many of us do not treasure our health. We skip exercise, and eat lazily rather than cook healthy food. Yes, there are many reasons (excuses, sometimes?) for this, but trust me, when being on toxic medication knocks you down, it does really emphasise what a gift it is to be able to be active and healthy.
Oh, and the single biggest factor in getting colon cancer? Obesity and an unhealthy diet.
So, treasure your health, exercise and eat well. Not only will you enjoy feeling fit and strong, but you give yourself a far better chance of not getting sick.
