Weird IS a superpower. To that, if you ever feel yourself or your business being too bland, consider if the next step for you is to #BeMoreWeird.
Yesterday I wrote: “Don’t be bland if you want to be remembered“, moving from talking about “Blands” (vs “Brands”) to focussing on your Eulogy vs Resumé virtues. Later, I saw a tweet:
Indeed, and I replied: My late mentor #EdPercival used to say “where I come from weird is a high form of praise.” Don’t be bland.
Ed Percival has been the greatest mentor in my life so far (see this post). I also mused in another post on: “Ed Percival and his Cayman legacy“, and in that second post, I told my story of meeting Ed and the huge impression he made on me. Now another “Ed” story. When Ed started a workshop with a group, he used to introduce himself, and in that introduction say something along the lines of:
“Today some of the things I talk about and teach you may seem a little, some you may actually consider strange, and some you may even find weird. When that happens, tell me, as where I come from, “Weird” is a high form of praise”.
Ed was the opposite of bland, he was a force of nature. Everyone who met him remembers that. Ed passed away on June 25, 2015. At his funeral service, people came from all over the world (including me) simply to be present and pay respects. Hundreds of people gathered after the funeral itself and sat for hours sharing their stories of the impact Ed made for them, each story building more and more resonance for the group around the energy, love, intention Ed put into his life.
Weird IS a superpower. Ed used to say #BeMoreYou. To that, if you ever feel yourself or your business being too bland, consider if the next step for you is to #BeMoreWeird.
