Take care of your people

This week I had a catch up call with a past client, a CEO who I hadn’t spoken to since early in the pandemic. They and their business have come through things well, largely due to foundations laid year before at multiple levels. One thing that stood out for me is that this CEO had a singular focus throughout. From this, for all leaders, above all else:

take care of your people

The one thing that will both help you and your organisation through what is to come in 2021 and beyond is this, plus it will build an even stronger foundation for the future. Whether you are a small or large business or a small or large country, take care of your people and you build a foundation for the future.

A warning though, choose not to take care of ALL of your people, and you damage that foundation, and cohesion and strength will be lost. It may take years for the cracks to show and then become gaping fissures, but it will happen.

Oh, and in order to be able to take care of your people, take care of yourself too. Sounds simple, often missed by the most caring of leaders. Put that oxygen mask on yourself first.
