A few weeks ago I wrote “Purpose, People, Planet – the new triple bottom line“.
That article is a synthesis of learning from many years of building businesses and supporting leaders of businesses and other organisations. In short, I said “we need a new triple bottom line, one that puts Profit as an outcome of focussing on the Source drivers of Purpose, People and Planet”
Today I am reminded of what drives the People of that triple bottom line, so let’s link the two.
This week I was reminded by Jeff Raker the Level Up Leadership coach, of the work of Dan Pink and his seminal book Drive.
In this, his own synthesis of what drives us as people comes down to three things:
- Purpose
- Autonomy
- Mastery
In working with leaders individually and in group facilitation, I long ago lost count of how many times I have asked people to google “Dan Pink RSA Animate” so they can watch this exquisite 10:47 animated video by the RSA of Dan talking about this.
So, I propose that the triple bottom line for business needs to change to focus on :
- Purpose
- People
- Planet
As a leader, could this be a template for you to both lead your company and to motivate your people?
